Cabo Roig
Review of Cabo Roig, one of the most popular coastal resorts on the Costa Blanca.
Cabo Roig - Jewel of the Costa Blanca
Located on the Southern Costa Blanca coastline is the popular and delightful seaside resort of Cabo Roig. Well loved for its superb sandy “blue flag” beaches, its stunning views of the sparkling blue Mediterranean sea, its picturesque cliff walks and its busy nightlife, Cabo Roig has plenty to offer the discerning holidaymaker. Generally quiet during the winter months, Cabo Roig comes to life around May time and is often busy right through to November.
Cabo Roig attracts holidaymakers from all over the world but primarily English, Irish and Spanish (particularly those from the city of Murcia who love this stretch of the coast). The busiest months are July and August, the quietest January and February.
The obtrusive watchtower which is the most famous landmark of Cabo Roig dates from the 16th century and was originally built to warn of attacks from Berber pirates who assailed the coastline in those long gone times. The tower now adjoins a restaurant, a great place for a quiet drink as it looks down over the marina and across the sea to La Manga. This is also the starting point for the wonderful cliff walk to La Zenia.
One of the main attractions of Cabo Roig is its wonderful sandy beaches. Most of the beaches along this stretch of the Costa Blanca coastline are very clean and most have “blue flag” status, Cabo Roig is no exception and its 2 main beaches (Cala Capitan and Cala Caleta) are clean and safe for children. Also within easy walking distance are the beaches at La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and Campoamor.
An aparthotel called the Diamont Blue is located right beside the strip, and would be ideal for you hotel accommodation in the resort. You can book using the box on the right.
The wonderful cliff-top walk from La Zenia to Cabo Roig is a great way to spend a morning or perhaps an evening whilst visiting the area. This fine walk offers some stunning views of the coastline and on a clear day it is possible to see the resort of La Manga glistening in the distance. During a hot summer’s evening you will also enjoy the cooling sea breeze which makes a pleasant change from the burning sun of a balmy August day.
Cabo Roig the whole of the Costa Blanca, enjoys a wonderful climate and it is claimed to be the most temperate region in the whole of Spain. The area enjoys well over 300 days of sun each year and has an average temperature of approximately 20 degrees centigrade. There is very little rainfall in Cabo Roig and what does fall occurs mostly during the winter months (mostly in November and February). For those who don’t like it too hot, May and October are perhaps the most pleasant months to visit, sun worshippers will hit the beaches of Cabo Roig in July and August and “bake” in temperatures that can reach 40 degrees centigrade.
Cabo Roig has a fine variety of shops, restaurants and bars, mostly centred around the well known Cabo Roig “strip” where there is plenty of choice for all ages and tastes. There are some fine restaurants for the discerning eater and also plenty of pub grub, fast food and takeaway establishments. Some of the most popular bars include the Bushwacka, Flannigans, the Queen Vic and the Bog Road.
For those who get bored with just sitting in the sun there are lots of other activities to enjoy in and around Cabo Roig. The Saturday market at Playa Flamenca is always popular with the ladies and if they can’t find any bargains here then a trip to the massive Friday market in Torrevieja may be just what is needed. Torrevieja has lots of other attractions including the Aqua Splash park (Aquopolis), the wonderful promenade with its huge array of restaurants and ice-cream parlours, the craft market (held every day), the fun fair (great for the kids) and the new Habaneras shopping centre.
There you have it - Cabo Roig, “the jewel of the Costa Blanca”, the seaside resort with something for everybody. Be sure to visit sometime soon.
Cabo Roig lies just off the N-332 road between Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada, and is just a twenty minute drive from San Javier (Murcia) airport. Also close by is the AP-7 motorway which will get you to Alicante airport in around forty five minutes.
